Jimbo Aquino, SSC-R, NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week (6) NCAA Press Corps, Sat, Aug 8, 2009

Jimbo Aquino showed he's the heart and soul of San Sebastian after leading the Stags to its seventh straight NCAA seniors' basketball victory.

Aquino buried 23 points and hauled down seven rebounds in San Sebastian's 91-76 drubbing of erstwhile co-leader and last year's runnerup Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers last Monday, enough to seal him his second ACCEL/Fil-Oil NCAA Player of the Week Player of the Week honor.

With Aquino's consistent 21-point average per game, San Sebastian managed to climb up to solo lead and remained the only unscathed team this season with a 7-0 win-loss record.

"He gave another clutch performance for the team and again proved his leadership," said Stags rookie coach Ato Agustin of the 23-year old native of Bamban, Tarlac.

Aquino, the first player to collect two NCAA POW honors this year, was the inaugural recipient of the award five weeks back when he led the Stags to it's first two wins this season including a shocker against the defending three-time champion San Beda Red Lions.

Against JRU, Aquino drained 14 of his total output in the first two quarters to pace San Sebastian and even outscored his fiercest scoring rival, Heavy Bomber John Wilson, by 14 markers the whole game.

Still Agustin admitted that there were some flaws that Aquino, was the first recipient of the plum backed by ACCEL and FilOil should address.

"The only problem with Jimbo especially when the crowd is cheering him on, he gets a little bit carried away," Agustin added about his ward, who suffered his first disqualification after committing his fifth foul late in the fourth. "I told him that he's our gunner and he has to control his fouls because the team needs him inside the court. He should adjust and play smart."

Aquino topped the likes of San Beda hot shots Garvo Lanete and Sudan Daniel and Letran's RJ Jazul for the weekly plum given by a group sports scribes from the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids covering the beat.

Jimbo Aquino, SSC-R, NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week (1) NCAA Press Corps, Sat, Jul 4, 2009

The NCAA Press Corps picked San Sebastian sharp shooter Jimbo Aquino as its ACCEL/Fil-Oil Player of the Week after powering the Stags to the early share of the lead in Season 85.

Aquino, who has taken the leadership cudgels from last year's leaders Jason Ballesteros and Jim Viray, averaged 23 points in wins over Perpetual Help and reigning three-peat champion San Beda the past week.

During that stretch, Aquino buried a whopping 10 of the 13 triples he attempted including six in a masterful shock 83-77 win over the heavily favored Lions Monday that sent them atop the heap along with last year's runner-up Jose Rizal, St. Benilde and guest team Arellano U on 2-0 (win-loss) slates.

It was enough to gain the nod of the group composed of the reporters from the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids as its first recipient of the award presented by ACCEL and Fil-Oil.

Aquino quickly thanked his new coach former PBA MVP Renato "The Atom Bomb" Agustin for the confidence he showed in him.

"I have so much confidence this year because of the new system of coach (Agustin)," said the soft-spoken Aquino, a 23-year-old native of Bamban, Tarlac.

Agustin, one the finest shooters that PBA has produced, felt nothing but impressed.

"He's one of the hardest worker of the team, he's the team leader," said Agustin, whose charges walloped the Altas, 76-64, in last week's opener at the Big Dome.

Aquino bested the likes of Jose Rizal's James Sena, Arellano's Giorgio Ciriacruz and St. Benilde's Jeff Morial for the weekly plum sponsored by ACCEL, a leading Filipino-based shoe and sports apparel, and Fil-Oil.

BARANGAY GINEBRA OFF TO GOOD START

Nealy stamps class as Kings outgun Tigers

Thursday, 05 March 2009

ANTIPOLO -- Talking about a grand comeback, Barangay Ginebra import Rod Nealy essayed one Wednesday night.

Nealy returned with a big bang for Ginebra, coming through with huge numbers with 42 points and 23 rebounds as the Kings opened their title-retention campaign in the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference with a 110-103 win over the Coca-Cola Tigers at the Ynares Sports Center here.

The former Houston Baptist U standout, Ginebra's import in a fifth-place finish in the same tourney in 2007, was all over the court and nearly completed a triple-double job as he also issued nine assists in 40 minutes of action.

"They (the Tigers) played a lot of zone and I took advantage of the new rule (relaxed hand check rule)," said Nealy, looking much better from two years ago at least in his first game in another tour of duty with the Kings.

"This is precisely why we brought him back. He can score, he works hard, and he's got good attitude," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico of his prized import.

With Nealy practically throwing his weight around, the Kings established control in the second period and held sway to the finish.

Nealy wound up with his PBA best rebounding effort and second-best scoring output.

Sunday Salvacion, enjoying extended minutes on the continued absence of Mark Caguioa and Junthy Valenzuela, rifled in five triples and finished with 17 points that went with five rebounds and one assist.

Jayjay Helterbrand and Paul Artadi added 15 and 10 points, respectively, combining for 12 in the payoff period.

Chico Lanete and JC Intal had their contributions in their debut with the Kings.

"Timing ang pasok ni Chico at JC dahil wala pa rin si Caguioa at Valenzuela. As I'd said in the last conference, kulang kami then ng one or two players in our rotation," said Uichico.

"Am happy with what we have now although I think we would still have match-up problems when pitted against other teams like Talk n Text. They scored 121 in their first game, ang hirap tapatan non," Uichico added.

J.J. Sullinger had 28 points and 11 rebounds in his debut with the Tigers with Alex Cabagnot, Ronjay Buenafe, Asi Taulava and Mark Macapagal all chipping in at least 10 points.

They kept the Kings from pulling away but just couldn't fully sway the tide in their favor either.

After the Tigers came threateningly close at 98-99, Helterbrand knocked in a trey and two charities to all but settle the outcome of the game.

Nealy set up Helterbrand for the three-pointer for his ninth assist with over two minutes left to play.

Alas, the versatile Ginebra import failed to get another one, thus, missing a triple-double job by an assist for the third time in his PBA career. He had one triple-double performance in 2007. (NC)

The scores:

Ginebra 110 -- Nealy 42, Salvacion 17, Helterbrand 15, Artadi 10, Wilson 8, Tubid 6, Reavis 6, Lanete 4, Intal 2, Menk 0.

Coca-Cola 103 -- Sullinger 28, Cabagnot 22, Buenafe 18, Taulava 14, Macapagal 10, Telan 9, Misolas 2, Calimag 0, Dimaunahan 0, Belasco 0.

Quarterscores: 26-27, 54-45, 79-71, 110-103

Bacchus leaves for Taiwan

For its impressive showing in the recent PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup, Bacchus Energy Drink has been invited to take part in the Taiwan International Tournament next week in Taichung, Taiwan.

Team manager Alfonso “Achit” Kaw of AK7 said the trip is also part of the team’s bonus following its respectable third place finish in the season-opening tournament – their best showing since joining the league in 2004.

Aside from competing in the four-nation tournament, Kaw said team patron Bong Tan will also tour the players as part of their build-up for the coming PBL tournament slated late next month.

The Energy Warriors, composed mainly by stars of University of the East, almost made it to the finals after taking a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five semis series with Magnolia Purewater, but their inexperience did them in.

“That’s the reason why Mr. Tan is giving them the opportunity to play against teams from other countries. They need to gain experience and boost their confidence,” said Kaw.

Aside from the host country, also taking part in the tournament starting on Feb.. 23 are Korea and Hong Kong. The team, mentored by Lawrence Chongson with Nel Parado and Rey Baena as assistans, departs on Sunday.

Paul Lee, who made history in the league by becoming the first rookie to win the Best Player of the Conference award, will spearhead the campaign of the Energy Warriors along with fellow UE mainstays Paul Zamar, James Martinez, Elmer Espiritu, Rudy Lingganay, Val Acuna and Parri Llagas.

Other members of the team are La Salle’s Rejan Lee, Adamson’s Jan Julius Colina, RC Reyes, Khalif Fortune and John Ray Alabanza.

Vanlandingham THREE!!!!!

Deep in 3 point territory -- that’s where Josh Vanlandingham made his mark in the Philippine Basketball League. In his rookie conference, he averaged 9 pts per game with a 42 % shooting clip from beyond the arc which topped the league. Though he showed his capability to slash inside, it was mainly his long bomb arsenal that had his name boom throughout the battleground.

Get to know three points about Josh Thomas Vanlandingham.

Point number 1- he’s from a champion line.

Josh’s maternal great-grandfather is two-time Olympian Teofilo “The Ilocano Shark” Yldefonso who got a bronze medal in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics’ 200 meter breaststroke event and then another bronze in the same competition in Los Angeles 4 years later. Teofilo Yldefonso is still recognized as one of the best swimmers the country has ever produced. But Josh didn’t know about this until his grandmother lectured him on his lineage before he packed his bags to try his luck in the Philippines.

Josh was born and raised in Seattle. His parents Mark and Karen encouraged him to pick up the sport of basketball at a tender age of 5 and involved him in a league when he was in his first grade at the Seattle Hill Elementary School. It was here where he became determined to master the sport, because in the entire year, he only scored 2 points on a fast break. The entire year!

But all that determination and competitive spirit running through his veins took him from that 2-point lay-in to becoming Athlete of the Year when he went to Everet Community College by averaging 19 points a ballgame.

Point number 2 – he played against Brandon Roy!

Back in his Snohomish High School days, during his senior year, they had a shot at a 4th place finish in a tournament where they played against Brandon Roy’s Garfield High School. The NBA 2006-2007 Rookie of the Year most definitely brought out his A game and was scorching from all fronts. Despite that, Josh Vanlandingham had a shot at upsetting the Bulldogs. Down the wire though, they were behind only one point, and Josh had possession. But he bricked the last attempt, and the game went to Roy’s team.

Despite the loss, Vanlandingham takes it as a valuable, unforgettable chapter in his life. Enough to fuel him to work on his game even more. He’s a John Wooden disciple and lives by the basketball guru’s words – “Make every practice your masterpiece. Work hard everyday to be where you want to be”.

In the eliminations of the PG Flex Linoleum Cup, Josh made his first ever endgame-winning shot with a trey which put the nail on the coffin of the Magnolia opposition.

In that extraordinary masterpiece play from beyond the arc, he harnessed the mojo of his Airness Michael Jordan, his all-time favorite. “I love how he can take over basketball games and how he wanted the last shot”, shares Josh, whose own last shot was replayed many times over in BTV’s highlight reels.

Point number 3 – He’s a book worm.

Josh loves to read. Many stereotype jocks as a “no-read, no-write” breed, but obviously Josh is one of the many who dispel that notion (although mind you there are some who average two syllables per word). He just finished reading “Five People You Meet In Heaven” by Mitch Albom, a book lent to him by neighbor and friend Ryan Reyes – a fellow book worm. It’s a story about Eddie, a simple man who led a normal life till a freak accident took it all away. He crossed paths with five people who have significantly made an impact in his life on earth in heaven. And each person he reconnected with in the after life provided him with divine wisdom. It’s a wonderful read, I’ve been a fan of the book since 2004.

“I learned about how your life can affect other people even if you don’t know it”, shares Josh, who truly comes across as some one who is conscientious with his dealings with people knowing that what he does can impinge or shape someone’s being.

He’s an ideal roommate for fellow Happee rookie Lance Convento who found him to be quiet in the beginning but learned about his new best friend’s good nature.

Josh Vanlandingham could be a force to reckon with in the amateur ranks, and his dream to reach the pros could bear fruit with the work ethic he has shown, the mental toughness and sweet shooting touch. He knows he’s got to buckle down and work on his defense though and be more of an all around player, something that his Coach Gee Abanilla is set to harness on his young gun.

Magnolia embracing underdog status By Jonas Terrado (February 2, 2009

After a grueling semifinals series, Magnolia Purewater head coach Koy Banal and his team is embracing the underdog status when the 2009 PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup finals begins tomorrow.

The multi-titled head coach, who hasn't won a PBL crown since 2006, believes that it will be their hearts that will carry them in their forthcoming duel with the six-peat seeking Harbour Centre in a best-of-five title affair.

"Siguro big heart. Big heart," Banal said, shortly after the Wizards rallied to oust Bacchus Energy Drink, 88-83, in the knockout semis tussle last Saturday.

It that match, they overcame a 12-point third quarter margin and a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter thanks to a telling 12-0 run before shutting down the young Bacchus squad in the homestretch to escape with the victory.

Although Magnolia survived a gutwrenching series with the upstart Energy Warriors, Banal isn't making fatigue an excuse when they go against the well-rested Batang Pier, which swept Hapee in the other semis duel last week.

"I like our situation," Banal said. "Yes, we went to our limits, we went to Game 5 medyo may fatigue factor pa pero hindi mo na iintindihin yan dahil sa sobrang hirap ng dinaanan mo, binugbog mo, binuhos mo lahat dun sa semis, I dont think magpapabaya yung mga players and I hope we will regain our strength and our usual self," he added.

It will be the fourth finals appearance of the San Miguel franchise since returning to the league in 2003. Their last trip came in the 2006 Heroes Cup when they won the crown past Rain or Shine after being down 0-2 in the series.

At that time, Banal guided a squad led by future pros Kelly Williams, Arwind Santos, Jeff Chan, RJ Rizada and Mark Isip, among others. This time, he will have a new core bannered by ex-pro Neil Raneses, Dylan Ababou, Al Magpayo, JP Alcaraz and Eder Saldua.

"I'm elated at high pa rin ako (on making the finals again). I'm glad that this franchise is back in the finals and hopefully we can give Harbour a good fight in this series," said Banal, whose squad lost both times to the Batang Pier when they met in the semifinals of both conferences last season.

Although his team is quite different from his previous teams, some of his players have been on championship teams. Raneses played for Magnolia, then-known as Viva Mineral Water, when they bagged the 2004 Unity Cup while Magpayo won a title with Montana Pawnshop in the 2005 Open Championship.

On the other hand, Ababou won two championships with the Batang Pier last season but he was beneath the shadows of stars Jason Castro, Solomon Mercado, TY Tang and Chan. This time, the University of Santo Tomas standout will have an opportunity to beat his former team in a more celebrated role.

Banal is out to make plans in hopes of upsetting their heavily-favored opponents despite getting swept by Harbour during the elimination round. They suffered a nail-biting 76-75 defeat in the first round last November 18 before dropping a 94-76 rout last December 9.

"Somehow we just have try to outbalance a thing and two and give them a new look," he said. "Our gameplan is to make it close, bahala na down the stretch who will execute."

Have MARCY!

Photos and words by: Patricia Bermudez-Hizon (December 19, 2008)

It’s hard to evade your destiny. If it’s written in the stars that you are to be a hoop star, then so be it. Such is the case of Marcy Arellano, Burger King’s court stunner, a true leader who thrives on taking the team through crunch time. His life’s episodes have led him to a road destined for potential greatness. And he’s not wasting any time to go down that avenue, in full speed, pushing that leather up.

Some 16 years back, then 6 year old Marcelino Arellano got addicted to basketball, playing on the streets of their Sta. Cruz Manila neighborhood. He didn’t get the real fundamentals ingrained in him till he hit the age of 10, but the hoop bug had already bit him and had him sneaking out of the house just to play ball.

High school came and saw Marcy working his way up from the farm team to the roster of the University of the East Pages all the way to his UAAP Juniors MVP stature on his final year. But not even that feather on his cap placed him on the fast lane to the UE Red Warriors line up. Not with the likes of James Yap and Paul Artadi as Coach Boyzie Zamar’s main weapons. But having to go through the grind with those UAAP turned professional superstars day in and day out did Marcy a lot of good. When his number was called up to play in the UAAP seniors arena, he quickly became known as a sweet shooter and a crunch time leader. All his potentials harnessed further under the wings of Coach Dindo Pumaren whose UE squad swept the eliminations only to falter in the finals to La Salle.

That episode in his career may not have churned out a championship, but it sure made him notorious in the amateur ranks. From his days with Harbour to his current battles with the Burger King Stunners, Marcy keeps showing he’s destined to make it big with his court abilities. He’s one of the cornerstones of Coach Allan Gregorio’s system.

Marcy said that “in life no matter how hard, don’t quit – never be a quitter”. That kind of philosophy reflects on the court, as he’s such a fighter, always pushing himself to the limit. And these are good traits he hopes to impart on his two younger brothers, Justin who’s in the 3rd grade, and Gino who’s a college sophomore. Both are showing passion for the sport, and are hoping to follow Kuya’s footsteps.

Marcy plays the role of “padre de pamilia” as his dad’s been working in Korea for about 8 years already. Though his father’s up to speed about every thing the boys are into, he has not been home since he migrated and has not seen his eldest in action. The gargantuan task of helping his mom Elizabeth while sharing the load of caring for the younger siblings coupled with making sacrifices has definitely helped Marcy mature earlier, and it shows with the way he carries himself on and off the court.

He is already laying the groundwork for a future that could involve building a small business or taking after his father who has exported his talents to another country. “No guarantees dahil madaming players dyan”, shared the star guard, “but I’m confident I’ll survive”.

“His work ethic is admirable – he comes to practice early, works real hard, and is the last person to leave the gym to work on his shooting” shared Coach AG. Coach is extremely proud of the fact that Arellano already finished his Business Management studies but went back to school to take another 2 year course. “With that kind of attitude, you know he’ll succeed in life”.

“With the things that he does, you know that he’ll make it in life”, mentioned Coach Allan. Marcy has made quite an impression on the Burger King coaching staff, including Assistant Coach Vergel Meneses whom he has idolized since he was young. “I was so excited kase idol ko sya. He gave me a jersey and always gives me advice and confidence”. Arellano recounted how the Areal Voyager tells him to “make (his) teammates look good, and bring the team’s tempo, and lead”, advice he’s all too eager to take to heart.

Seems like Marcy Arellano has the right formula and attitude to help steer the National squad and make it big in the pros, just like the warriors that came before him – the Living Legend Robert Sonny Jaworski and Big Game James Yap.

Magnolia's Ababou is on the rise

November 18, 2008

After only two games, Dylan Ababou has already gained the attention he truly deserves to have a long time ago.

With his deadly sniping and ferocious inside plays, Ababou has helped Magnolia Purewater gain a share of the lead with defending champion Harbour Centre in the PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup.

His new-found confidence could be the result of having to play longer this time and that's the reason why Magnolia coach Koy Banal is brimming with confidence these days.

"I was very much excited when I know he will be joining us this conference because I know what he's capable of doing," said Banal who is off to a good start not seen the past conferences.

Playing at an average of 25 minutes per contest, Ababou responded well by posting big numbers of 18.5 points on 13-of-21 shooting clip, including an impressive 9-of-12 shooting from the 2-point zone.

He also is contributing 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals, thus making him the first PBL Press Corps Player of the Week winner for the period of Nov. 8 to 15.

Ababou, who still have one playing year left for UST, is now on his second year in the league.

Despite his talent, he played sparingly last conference with Harbour Centre since he had to fight for the No. 3 position with the likes of Jeff Chan, Chad Alonzo and Jerwin Gaco. As if that was not enough, Ababou also suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for most of the conference.

"That's why I'm also very thankful to the Harbour Centre from its team owner Mikee Romero and coach Jorge Gallent for releasing Ababou after out tie-up with UST," added Banal.

Ababou debuted for the Wizards on a high note by firing 19 points in the team's 88-80 overtime victory against Pharex. He followed it up with 18 points on a 5-of-6 shooting from the two-point region as Magnolia defeated Toyota Otris, 77-65.

Ababou won the PBL POW award at the expense of teammate Yuri Escueta, Bacchus guard Paul Lee, Hapee Toothpaste Fil-am Joshua Vanlandingham and Harbour Centre rookie guard Mark Barocca.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK Magnolia’s Taylor is PBL top player

December 3, 2008

Chester Taylor may not be as popular as University of Santo Tomas teammates Jervy Cruz and Dylan Ababou, but the 6-foot-6 center knows his role very well.

Given the exposure he needs, Taylor knows he can get the job done – anytime.

Aware of Taylor’s talent, Magnolia coach Koy Banal has been so kind to him since the start of the PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup, giving him the opportunity to flaunt his true potential to become one of the stars of the league.

Banal is indeed right.

With the trust and confidence given to him, Taylor has responded gamely and is now fast emerging as one of the league’s top attractions which he best exemplified last week where he produced his best game.

His 18 points in only 13 minutes in Magnolia’s 91-79 win over the Burger King Stunners last Thursday earned him his first Player of the Week award since joining the league last year.

Interestingly, Taylor edged out Cruz, now playing for Hapee Toothpaste, Harbour Centre’s Rico Maierhofer and Ababou – his Magnolia teammate – for the weekly honors given by the PBL Press Corps.

Taylor is the second player from Magnolia to win the award after Ababou took the opening week honor. Their winning of the awards speaks well of Magnolia’s record (4-1) in the season-opening tournament – their finest start after the era of Kelly Williams and Arwind Santos.

He highlighted his performance by shooting 3-of-4 from way beyond the 3-point arc – all of them in the first half which the Magnolia Wizards used as their launching pad to post their second straight lopsided win.

Taylor just scored five points in the team’s 86-73 win over Hapee Toothpaste two days earlier, but his presence in the middle intimidated the Complete Protectors from venturing into the shaded lane.

Aside from his deadly hands from the perimeter, what impresses Banal most about Taylor’s vast talents is his defense.

“Remember, when we play against Harbour last year in the semis and Taylor was still with Harbour, he basically killed us with his defense. He helped limit the production of my big men, especially Sam (Ekwe),” said Banal.

“So when Harbour owner Mikee Romero allowed Taylor and Ababou to play for us, I was really excited because I know the value of these players. They have the talent and attitude to become big stars some day,” added Banal.

Well, that’s just short of saying that Taylor is indeed tailor-made for Magnolia Purewater

Beyond Reproach

Story and Pictures by: Patricia Bermudez-Hizon (November 17, 2008)

Confucius said that the father who does not teach his son his duties is equally guilty with the son who neglects them. Koy Banal does not leave any stone unturned when it comes to delineating his son’s duties, off and especially on the hard court as his ace playmaker.

“There’s so much pressure on me to play well under my dad. Others think I got drafted because my dad’s the coach. I need to prove that I got the spot on my own and not because of my dad,” says Jonathan Banal, Magnolia Purewater’s rookie guard.

“I have a tendency to be harder on him and he has to accept that. Our relationship in the team has to be beyond reproach, walang may masasabi,” revealed head coach and father Koy Banal.

The father-and-son tandem know they have much criticisms to face, more that that of a coach and player. Coach Koy has to pay the price of being dogged by that special kind of pressure of being coach and father. Jonathan has to accept that he’s expected to work doubly hard as player and as son.

There are ground rules. Everyone has to wear different hats.

Off the basketball court Tan describes his father as a loving and ultra-caring head of the family who makes time to listen to the kids’ problems and spends time horsing around with all 5 of them. But when the coaching cap is on, Coach Koy expects nothing less than everything from all his players, most especially Tan who has to be the extension of the Coach as the court general.

Tan is working on physical strength and endurance but continues to capitalize on his quickness and maturity as a decision maker. It’s a bonus that he knows how the coach thinks, a factor that’s important as the point guard of the team.

“Whatever effort the players put up, I expect Tan to double that. If he makes mistakes, I shout at him like I do the others, though I do have a tendency to be harder on him,” admits the veteran tactician. “Before the draft he called me up and told me he wanted to play for me, but I told him that it was better if he went and played for other teams,” recalled Coach Koy. He recounted how he told his son that he wouldn’t pick him because Pharex has expressed interest to put him in their lineup. But on draft night itself, the coaching staff consulted each other, and based on their need and based on the available talent, selected Jonathan Banal as their 2nd round pick.

Koy never forced basketball on Tan, who showed love for the game on his own volition. “When Tan was 4 years old, I put up a makeshift basketball ring in the little space we had in the garage. I was an assistant coach for Mapua then.” Because the car was in the garage, the 4-year old Tan who wanted to play basketball while daddy was away, got the keys and decided to move the car! Needless to say, the little boy got in trouble and even asked his dad not to send him to jail. The father could only be secretly proud of the little boy who had the desire to pick up a sport he also truly loved.

But more than just hoop dreams, Koy also has dreams of all his children to be serious with the Lord. Being a devout Born-Again Christian, he revealed one instance where Tan had an altercation with his mother and how he reminded his son of a verse from the Ephisians about honoring thy mother and father. And Tan was also reminded to how he came to be and the hardships his parents went through.

“When he was born, we already knew he was a gift from God”. Born in the lobby of the PolyMedic Hospital, with less than 7 months of shelter in his mother’s womb, Jonathan was only 2.3 pounds. “He was so small. I counted his fingers, and saw how his limbs were the size of my pinky finger,” said the proud father. “I praised the Lord and had faith that he’d survive,” beamed Coach Koy who added that even the pediatrician Dra. Flordeliz Regalado-Garcia is still in awe of Tan who beat the odds and survived. Tan was most definitely born a fighter.

When you coach your son, you are the two most important people in his life. You’re the coach and you’re the father. It’s important to not rob him of either one, and Coach Koy knows that. He’s trying to be the best of both.

“People might think there’s priority for Tan. I’m so careful with this and I have my coaches tell me if I’m crossing that boundary. But I am at peace with the decision in getting him. I trust him, I believe he can help the team. If there’s one guy I can consider to dive and fight for the ball, give anything for the team, it’s Jonathan”.

RAIN OR SHINE WINS ON BIG FINISHING KICK

Late barrage of 3s sinks Ginebra deeper into cellar Wednesday, 05 November 2008

The Rain or Shine youth brigade kept on making waves and the Elasto Painters continued to reap modest gains.

The Elasto Painters strung up together six triples in the fourth quarter and totaled a franchise-best 16 as the Asian Coating squad scored a come-from-behind 106-102 win over the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

Coach Caloy Garcia and his gang jacked up their record to 5-3, assuring the franchise of its best showing in a tournament. The ball club had never won more than four games in a any tourney since joining the league in 2006.

"Our rookies made it happen again. It's the character of our rookies. They're acting like grizzled veterans," said Garcia, specifically lauding Gabe Norwood, Tyrone Tang and Sol Mercado for their sterling efforts.

"Our rookies are building the team's character. Hopefully, we can carry it on as we next play Air21. I'm sure they will come out strong coming off a sorry loss (to San Miguel Beer also Wednesday night). They're also eager to get back at us," Garcia added.

Norwood and Tang fired 23 and 20 points respectively -- both the best output for the two players so far in their young pro career. Mercado churned out 13 points, assists, two rebounds and one steal.

The three combined for 10 treys, including five in the fourth quarter where Rain or Shine regrouped, wiping out an 11-point deficit to deal Ginebra a fifth straight loss after a 2-0 start in the tourney.

The Elasto Painters were still down at 81-86 when Mercado, Tang and Eddie Laure rifled in five straight triples in a decisive assault to turn the game around for the team.

JayR Reyes completed a three-point play off Eric Menk to cap an 18-4 run that gave the Elasto Painters a 99-90 lead with time down to 1:19.

"Credit goes to the players. They started strong then became soft in the second and third quarters but they themselves recovered," said Garcia.

Reyes and Rob Wainwright also finished with big numbers for Rain or Shine with the former putting in 16 points and 10 rebounds and the latter piling up 12 points, two rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.

Eric Menk was productive with 24 points and 12 rebounds but Jayjay Helterbrand essentially made only five points in the ball game. The Ginebra ace pointguard finished with 11 with six done when the game was all but over.

The two teams figured in a highly physical battle marred by a confrontation between Reyes and Alex Crisano. Both were assessed a technical foul for a second motion.

Norwood scattered 11 in the opening quarter, fueling Rain or Shine's strong start that gave them a 34-23 margin going into the second period.

Ginebra had its own searing attack in the second quarter though and the team closed the half at 48-46 in its favor. (NC)

The scores:

Rain or Shine 106 -- Norwood 23, Tang 20, Reyes 16, Mercado 13, Wainwright 12, Laure 8, Isip 6, Salangsang 3, Lopez 3, Ibanes 2, Arana 0.

Ginebra 102 -- Menk 24, Salvacion 21, Artadi 11, Helterbrand 11, Crisano 10, Wilson 7, Cabatu 6, Tubid 5, Escalona 4, Pacana 3, Holper 0, Mamaril 0.

Quarterscores: 34-23, 46-48, 68-76, 106-102

HAPEE COMPLETE PROTECTORS

HAPEE TOOTHPASTE

Hapee coach Gee Abanilla (standing, seventh from left) and team manager Bernard Yang (standing, 8th from left) pose with their players and staff prior to a recent practice for the 2009 PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup which starts on Saturday.

Hapee hopes to end ‘bridesmaid’ tag
(November 2, 2008)

Hapee Toothpaste was buffeted by the departure of four top players, including the versatile and electrifying Fil-Am Gabe Norwood who joined the pro league a couple of months back.

Truly, the exit of Norwood and three other players – Larry Rodriguez, Mark Borboran and Reed Juntilla – created a big vacuum in the team that made the job of newly-hired coach Gee Abanilla look incredibly tougher in the 2009 PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup which opens shop on Nov. 8 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.

But Abanilla is taking it in different perspective, saying it’s more of an opportunity than a problem since he’s a strong believer of the catch phrase that “nothing is impossible”.

Though Jervy Cruz, the former UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner from University of Santo Tomas, is the only marquee player left in the team, Abanilla strongly believes that Hapee Toothpaste – owned by industrialist and philanthropist Dr. Cecilio Pedro – has what it takes to contend for the title once again.

“I’m happy with the way the players accepted my system of coaching. The acceptance was very good,” Abanilla, who took the job vacated by Louie Alas after Hapee lost to Harbour Centre in the finals of the last conference, said.

Team manager Bernard Yang and Pedro’s top lieutenant Ding Salvador can attest to that, saying the growing excitement of the players is the result of Abanilla’s excellent rapport and motivating power.

“He’s a good motivator and very understanding to our players and that’s the reason why he easily got the respect of the team,” said Yang. “We hope he can help relive our happy days in the league.”

Hapee Toothpaste has yet to win a title since ruling the 2003-04 season although they made it to the finals in three of the last four conferences.

“It’s a tough task but we’ll be ready each game. We have a tradition to live,” Yang, the longest serving team official in the league, added.

Aside from Cruz, Abanilla hopes to squeeze the best out of rookies Lance Covento and Joshua Vanlandingham – both blessed with a good shooting arm. The other new faces in the team are Bacolod’s Ely Olarte, Jeff Morial and Dave Najorda.

Dino Daa, Roel Hugnatan, Alfie Grijaldo, Anthony Espiritu will provide experience and the needed muscle in the shaded lane while Earn Saguindel and Jim Viray will supply the needed firepower and poise.

Cruz’s performance in the UAAP – his last year in the country’s glamorous collegiate league – reminded anyone of what he’s capable of when he’s healthy. Though the 6-foot-4 Cruz is still not yet in his top form, he will nevertheless play a big role in the team’s bid to end a four-year drought.

Since Abanilla is disciple of a fast game, expect a lot of ball movements and fastbreaks from the team.

“I want everybody to deliver not only Jervy. So for us to perform well, we have to be fast and quick. Spacing is also important, so that each player will have a chance to score,” said Abanilla.

5-year program for women's basketball laid down Oct 21,08

Here's a piece of good news for female basketball players of the country.

The Women's Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) is not just going to be a one-conference affair but it's going to be a five-year long program to sustain the growth of women's basketball in the country.

That was assured by PBL Commissioner Chino Trinidad and Chairman Mikee Romero of Harbour Centre during a press lunch yesterday where the participating teams were formally presented.

"Dr. Romero is so determined top uplift the level of competition in women's basketball that's why we plan to stage this kind of tournament for five years so that female players will have a league of their own," said Trinidad. "If we can help our male players there's no reason why can't we help our female players."

Romero said he was elated with the support of various companies, saying: "I'm thankful for the companies who came here to support our project. As I said before, this is for the women's cause."

"It's high time that we give them an opportunity to play even after their college days. Basketball is fun, let us support WPBL. The future of women's basketball will start from this project," said Romero. "By reviving this tournament, I'm sure we can put up a competitive team in the next SEA Games.

To add color to the revival of the league is the expected showdown between fierce rival schools Ateneo and La Salle.

Nutri-C, one of the leading juice drinks in the country today, will have the core of Ateneo as its players while Republic Flour Mills (RFM) of Joey Concepcion, a long-time PBL supporter, will bankroll the participation of the Lady Archers.

Joel Lopa of Nutri-C also lauded the effort of the PBL in reviving the competition, saying: "With the revival of WPBL, I'm sure college players will now have an extra motivation to work and play hard because they have something to look up after their college days."

Smart Sports big boss Patrick "Pato" Gregorio said the revival of women's basketball has been his dream even during his time as Executive Director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

"Women's basketball needs a new direction and this was my priority project before. With Mr. Manny V. Pangilinan as president of SBP, we are going to support this project all the way," said Gregorio.

Aside from Nutri-C-Ateneo and RFM-La Salle, also confirmed to take part in the tournament last played in 1999 are Smart Sports, Chito Narvasa's Muscle Tape-Lyceum, Discovery Suite-RP women's team, Romero's Oracle Residences, Bacchus Energy Drink and Ever Bilena of former PBL chairman Dioceldo Sy.

Smart Sports, according to Gregorio, has already made University of the Philippine (UP) as its partner school while Oracle will UAAP champion Far Eastern University as its partner.

Ever Bilena coach Patrick Aquino said they are targeting players from University of Santo Tomas and other colleges to beef up their campaign.

Meanwhile, the drafting will be held tomorrow at the Discovery Suite in Ortigas Center will Oracle, a high-end dormitory in front of Ateneo, picking first followed by Smart Sports. The teams who will pick as No. 3, 5 and 7 picks will be known today upon the confirmation of Pharex.

WPBL tryout draws 125 players Oct 19,08

If the number is use as an indication, then the Women’s Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) – back after almost a decade of absence – will be a lot more fun and exciting this year.

A total of 125 aspirants – some of them coming as far as Cebu – showed up during the open tryout held yesterday at the Jose Rizal University gym in Mandaluyong City which is a clear manifestation that women’s basketball is still alive and kicking in the country.

PBL officials, led by Commissioner Chino Trinidad, Deputy Commissioner Tommy Ong, Executive Director Butch Maniego and chairman Mikee Romero of Harbour Centre were very satisfied with the turnout of the one-day tryout supervised by Joey Guanio and Jigs Mendoza.

“The number of participants is a good indication of what to expect in the coming tournament. If only we have 20 teams for the coming tournament then we can accommodate them all,” said Romero, the man responsible for the revival of the event. “Halos lahat nagpakita ng galling para makasama sa WPBL.”

“With this number of aspirants, we have a bright future ahead when it comes to women’s basketball. It’s really my dream to win both the men’s and women’s divisions in the SEA Games,” added Romero.

Also present were Patrick “Pato” Gregorio of Smart Sports under the company of telecommunication mogul Manny V. Pangilinan, Haydee Ong of Nutri-C under the company of Jun Sy of Nokia, Pat Aquino of Ever Bilena, Chito Narvasa and Tanny Gonzales of Muscle Tape-Lyceum and representatives from Discovery Suite, Pharex, Bacchus Energy Drink and Oracle Residence.

Trinidad and Romero will announce today the final composition of the tournament today.

“We see at least 10 teams competiting in the coming tournament. But I hope our other regular members will take part in the next conference,” said Trinidad.

Maniego said the drafting of the players will be held either on Tuesday or Wednesday

Former RP standout lauds WPBL revival

Former Philippine team standout Haydee Ong said yesterday the revival of the Women’s Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) is a shot in the arm for women’s basketball in the country.

Ong, who will call the shots for Nutri-C (not Godiva as earlier reported) in the coming tournament, emphasized the need for a highly-competitive tournament in the country in order to raise the level of game of female cagers as well as encourage the young ones to take up the sport seriously.

“The revival of women’s tournament is good because this will showcase our own brand of basketball and this will also help the national team,” said Ong, who is expected to watch open tryout which the PBL will conduct today at the Jose Rizal University gym.

“This kind of tournament is going to help the sports program of women’s basketball, I just hope others will get involve in this kind of project,” Ong, who was as the assistant coach of the national team during the SEA Games in Thailand last year

Close to 100 players from various colleges and universities are expected to join the tryout which will be supervised by PBL technical operations head Joey Guanio.

The tryout is set from 8 a.m. to 12 noon but the players are advised to come early for registration and further instructions.

Meanwhile, the management of Nutri-C, one of the leading juice drinks in the country today, is going to tap the players of Ateneo to spearhead its campaign in the coming tournament.

Cynthia Tiu’s Discovery Suite, on the other hand, will sponsor the RP women’s team to keep the Nationals in top form.

Also joining the tournament are Smart Sports of Manny V. Pangilinan, Ever Bilena of former PBL chairman Dioceldo Sy, Muscle Tape of Chito Narvasa, Oracle Residence of PBL chairman Mikee Romero, Pharex and Bacchus Energy Drink.

Beauty products spice up WPBL action Oct 18,08

The presence of two leading beauty products – Ever Bilena and Godiva – is likely to perk up action when the newly-revived Women's Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) opens shop next month.

"It's going to be an exciting tournament because of the entry of the two beauty products," said PBL Chairman Mikee Romero, the man behind the revival of women's tournament in the country's premier amateur basketball league.

Ever Bilena, owned by former PBL chairman Dioseldo Sy, is looking for a tie-up with either University of Santo Tomas or La Salle in the hope of defending the title it last won in 1999.

"We are now almost in the final stage of negotiation with the players of both schools. We hope to put up another competitive team again," said Sy.

Aside from Godiva and Ever Bilena, also set to join the tournament are Smart Sports of telecommunication mogul Manny V. Pangilinan, National University of SM Group of Companies, Chito Narvasa's Muscle Tape, Discovery Suite, Pharex, Bacchus Energy Drink and Oracle Residence, a high-end dormitory owned by the family of Romero.

"There are other companies interested to join but we are going to announce it on Monday," said Romero. "The RP Youth will also be invited to play in the tournament."

Godiva, on the other hand, is likely to tap the players from Ateneo to carry its color in the tournament aimed at raising the level of women's competition and help identify prospective members of the national training pool for future international tournaments, including the SEA Games.

"This tournament is for the women's cause, we have to raise the level of women's competition because we are nor far behind in the regional competition," said Romero, who added that the league will hold an open tryout on Sunday at the Jose Rizal University gym.

PBL Commissioner Chino Trinidad designated former PBA coach Joey Guanio to handle the tryout set from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Players are advised to be at the JRU gym at 7:15 for registration.

Smart Sports will have University of the Philippines as its partner, Muscle Tape with Lyceum, Discovery Suite with the RP women's team.

KING SOLOMON'S MINES: EXPLOSIVE DEBUT

Player of the Week(end) October 4 & 5
Monday, 06 October 2008

Image

SOLOMON Mercado sort of came under the radar when he was tabbed at No. 5 by Alaska in the PBA Rookie Draft last Aug. 31.

Then the doubts around him grew when he was traded the very next day to Rain or Shine.

Not anymore.

Now everybody’s taking notice of the six-foot guard following his impressive debut for Rain or Shine last Sunday in the KFC Philippine Cup and making him the hands-down choice as the Smart Accel- PBA Press Corps’ Player of the opening weekend.

The former standout for BIOLA University led the Elasto Painters to a 120-102 shocker over the Air21 Express, winding up with a game-high 29 points for the best rookie debut since Asi Taulava’s 32 for Mobiline in 1999.

He also had seven rebounds, four assists and just one turnover in 34 minutes of action to handily beat out Talk 'N Text’s Jared Dillinger, the No. 2 overall pick who had 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block in the Tropang Texters’ 98-97 squeaker over Coca-Cola on opening day Saturday.

Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia commented that Mercado’s unexpected explosion was largely due to the shroud of unfamiliarity surrounding the trim 200-pounder.

Hindi pa kasi siya nakikitang maglaro,” he said with a sly grin.

Alaska coach Tim Cone had no such reservations on the 24-year-old, who first strutted his wares for Harbour Centre in the PBL, impressing the Aces and making him their fifth overall pick in this year's Draft. But he was later traded to Rain or Shine along with Eddie Laure.

“We knew he could be a special player,” said Cone in explaining the trade that enabled Alaska to acquire the Elasto Painters’ Joe Devance and second round picks in 2010 and 2011 in exchange.

“The thing is, he didn’t fit our puzzle at that time. Not with our backcourt of Willie (Miller), LA (Tenorio), Jeffrey (Cariaso), and Larry (Fonacier). And Joe is a piece in our puzzle.

“It’s a good trade. We knew he would get the time and the touches with them (Rain or Shine). It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”

As if to prove Cone’s words, Mercado displayed an assortment of moves and touches that had those watching his first PBA game at the Cuneta Astrodome readily comparing him to Barangay Ginebra’s prolific Mark Caguioa.

He made his first two shots, both left-handed drives through traffic, before displaying another facet of his game by scoring 14 of his points in the second quarter, anchored on a 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

Those performances helped Rain or Shine overcome a 24-31 deficit, post a 61-53 halftime lead and turn the game into a rout that was deemed inevitable after the Elasto Painters erected as much as a 109-89 spread.

It marked the first time the team, formerly known as Welcoat, triumphed in an opening assignment and fanned hopes it will now avoid its usual 10th and last finish.

Garcia, who is only in his second conference with the team as head coach after taking over Leo Austria in the season-ending Fiesta Conference early this year, would rather take it one game at a time, but was justifiably pleased with his charges’ initial showing.

“Again, this is just our first game and we’re still the youngest team in the league. But ipinakita nilang they’re really made for the PBA. Iba talaga ang puso ng mga bata,” he stated.

Mercado is certainly living proof of that.

MERCADO-LED RAIN OR SHINE SENDS MESSAGE TO OPPOSITION

Elasto Painters smother Fiesta runner-up Air21 in smashing season debut
Monday, 06 October 2008

AS good as hoped – and more.

Solomon Mercado proved Rain or Shine management’s trust in him was well-founded, leading the team to a 120-102 stunner over Air21 Sunday in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The Fil-Am rookie, drafted fifth overall by Alaska but acquired by Rain or Shine in the Joe Devance deal, wound up with a game-high 29 points, fashioning the best rookie debut since Asi Taulava’s 32 for Talk ‘N Text in 1999.

With Eddie Laure, Jayr Reyes and Ryan Arana chipping in their ample share, the Elasto Painters took full control of the game right in the second quarter to lead by as much as 109-89 and easily carve the virtual breakthrough win of sorts.

Air21 was coming off a sterling conference and was expected by most to simply roll over the former Welcoat team that finished dead-last in its first two seasons with the league. Instead, the Express were the ones who showed the jitters and frustrations only newcomers are usually prone to and thus ceded only their second game in nine total meetings with their foes.

The win also marked the first time the Elasto Painters triumphed in an opening assignment, but head coach Caloy Garcia was quick to stifle their supporters’ rising hopes, pointing out it was just one game.

“Sana hindi maging complacent ang mga bata because of this,” said the man who is at the team’s helm for only the second conference. “But definitely this is a very different team and they showed they are capable of playing with the big boys.”

It also put the Elasto Painters on track for their immediate goal of avoiding a 10th place finish like in their first four conferences since entering the league in 2006.

“Again, this is just our first game and we’re still the youngest team in the league. But ipinakita nilang they’re really made for the PBA. Iba talaga ang puso ng mga bata,” Garcia stated.

Typifying Air21’s self-destruction were veterans Homer Se and Wynne Arboleda and third-year pro Arwind Santos, who were ejected one after another.

Ranidel de Ocampo paced Air21 with team-highs of 22 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. But the Express were simply headed for defeat in the absence of the other key cogs in their runner-up finish behind Barangay Ginebra in the last Fiesta Conference.

Doug Kramer added a career-high 16 points while JC Intal and Se added 10 each.

Laure, part of the Mercado-Devance deal that also involved Rain or Shine’s 2010 and 2011 second round picks going to Alaska, had 20 points for his highest output the last six seasons while Arana and Reyes wound up with 17 points each.

They also helped atone for Gabe Norwood’s shaky debut that saw this year’s top overall pick notching just six points, two rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes. He, however, was responsible for Arboleda’s ejection by drawing the latter’s second technical foul at the 1:13 mark of the third period.

It was the same infraction that Santos emulated in the final 7:04 mark but against Mercado, who also had seven rebounds, four assists and just one turnover in 34 minutes of action.

But the Express downfall began to take shape early, when Se was called for a flagrant foul-penalty 2 for planting an elbow on Mark Andaya’s face during a rebound play, 4:17 to go in the second quarter.

That infraction came at the height of Rain or Shine’s 19-2 run that gave it a 53-41 spread and primed it up for more runs that quelled Air21's protracted uprisings. (NCo)

The scores:

Rain or Shine (120) – Mercado 29, Laure 20, Arana 17, Reyes 17, Wainwright 10, Tang 7, Norwood 6, Ibanez 5, Andaya 3, Dulay 2, Isip 2, Salangsang 2.

Air21 (102) – De Ocampo 22, Kramer 16, Intal 15, Se 10, Santos 9, Quinahan 8, Cruz 7, David 5, Billones 4, Canaleta 3, Villanueva 2, Arboleda 1.

JASON CASTRO HOME SOON TO JOIN PHONE PALS

Jason Castro is playing a second tournament with the Singapore Slingers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia then will return home to play for Talk ‘N Text in the Philippine Basketball Association.

"He's under contract to play with the Slingers in the National Basketball League in Australia. Since the Slingers have left the NBL, Jason wants out. He's looking forward to play for Talk ‘N Text," said Castro's agent-adviser Danny Espiritu.

"The Slingers want an addendum in their contract to keep Jason, but Jason has made up his mind to go home after the Malaysian invitational," Espiritu added.

Castro played his first tournament with the Slingers in the recent Sultan Cup in Brunei, leading the team to the championship and emerging as the league MVP.

The day after the Sultan Cup championship, the flamboyant guard out of Philippine Christian U was picked No. 3 overall in the 2008 PBA Rookie Draft. He's one of four draftees chosen by the Pals aside from Jared Dillinger, Rob Reyes and Pong Escobal.

After the Malaysian invitational, the Slingers are to return in their homebase in Singapore playing host to the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants and Air21 Express among other foreign guest teams in their own invitational tourney.

"Jason wants out after Malaysia so he can start practicing with Talk ‘N Text," said Espiritu.

Four Australian players had left the Slingers after the Brunei Sultan Cup.

Apparently, Espiritu has closed a deal with Talk ‘N Text for Castro while the player was abroad. The player is likely to get an P8.7 million package in three years as what Dillinger and Reyes stands to receive at the Smart/PLDT franchise.

Elsewhere, Red Bull has extended the playing contracts of Cyrus Baguio and Carlo Sharma, Air21 has re-signed Homer Se and KG Canaleta while Alaska has acquired 6-foot-7 center-forward Ervin Sotto. (NC

PUREFOODS OFF TO QATAR, SINGAPORE FOR TOUGH GAMES

Giants sign Belga, Fernandez, Alonzo, Aban

Monday, 08 September 2008

Purefoods has effected a revamp in its lineup, and it will see how the new mix works as it plays goodwill exhibition games in Qatar and Singapore.

The Giants’ management is signing up draftees
Beau Belga and Jonathan Fernandez, and free agents Chad Alonzo and Aaron Aban before leaving for Doha, Qatar Wednesday.
"These are good pre-season training. We can't go wrong with these trips... all expenses paid which can help fast track our effort to build up the team," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

In Qatar, the Giants will be up against the Qatari and the Jordanian national teams. After the Qatar trip, the Giants will swing by Singapore to take on the Singapore Slingers.

"It's great to be mentioned in the same breath with Ginebra. Maybe, we're getting these invites because of it," said Gregorio, referring to a recent survey saying Purefoods is now tied with Ginebra as the most popular teams in the PBA.

Belga, Fernandez, Alonzo and Aban are beefing up the Purefoods team now down to seven players in James Yap, Kerby Raymundo, Rico Villanueva, Roger Yap, Peter June Simon, Jondan Salvador and Chico Lanete.

Fighting out for the last three slots are Richard Yee, Ardy Larong, Rob Sanz and rookie free agent
Al Vergara.

Romel Adducul has beaten cancer and is now trying to get back in shape.

"Romel is far from being competitive. He's working out and everything depends on his condition. There's always a slot reserved for him. In time, he'll be ready," said Gregorio.

The youthful Purefoods mentor doesn't discount the possibility of trades to fill up the last three slots in the team that finished second behind Sta. Lucia Realty in last Philippine Cup.

"(Beau) Belga is a solid acquisition boosting our frontline. Chad (Alonzo), (Aaron) Aban and (Jonathan) Fernandez, at three spot, are young players but they can compete based on practice. I certainly have no problem at two-guard with James Yap and June Simon. I'm okay at the point with Roger Yap and Chico (Lanete) but I'm still looking for one and I'm seriously considering Al Vergara," said Gregorio.

The Giants finished a game short of winning last season's Philippine Cup but struggled and eventually failed to make it past the wildcard round in the Fiesta Conference ruled by the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Gregorio believes the Kings topped the import-reinforced tourney on sheer talent.

"Ginebra has proven that talent can win a championship. Kahit pilay-pilay na sila, but because of their talent, they were able to win
. Ngayon halos lahat ng teams, direction ng Ginebra ang sinusundan," said Gregorio.

INJURY-HOBBLED GINEBRA LIVES TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY

Alexander explodes for 37 points, 24 rebounds as Kings force Game 7
Monday, 18 August 2008
Barangay Ginebra, walking wounded, leaned on sheer heart to fashion out a stirring come-from-behind 80-75 win over Air21 Sunday night to force a deciding Game Seven in their 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference title showdown.

Chris Alexander had his PBA career-best performance, keying a decisive Ginebra turnaround in the third quarter that led to the victory cheered on by the predominant Kings supporters at the overflowing Araneta Coliseum.

Alexander scored 20 of his 37 points in the third period as the Kings made an 18-point swing from a 38-50 count and went on to foil the Express' first crack at wrapping up the best-of-seven series.

The two teams instead fight for all the marbles Wednesday also at the Big Dome.

"(The boys) just lived up to the spirit of Barangay Ginebra – never say die, keep the energy, keep the spirit. We had no other recourse since it's a knockout game for us. Something good came out of it," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

"It has nothing to do with the Xs and Os. It's sheer heart," Uichico added.

Air21 coach Bo Perasol took his hat off to the Kings for their Game Six effort but he remained confident they would win the series in the end.

"Imagine, we lost Steven Thomas (on fouls) with over five minutes left to play and we're beaten by only five. That says a lot na kaya namin manalo," said Perasol.

"The boys were sad with the loss but they themselves remained confident we can pull it off. Game Seven is all or nothing. Patibayan ito ng puso," Perasol added.

Alexander went on the attack in the third quarter with Thomas already in foul trouble, and the Kings swayed the tide in their favor at 61-55 on a 23-5 onslaught.

They never looked back from there, winning the contest that drew an all-time ticket sales record of P2.5 million.

The Express jumped the gun on the Kings but later reeled on fouls to key players.

On the trail from the start, the Kings had their first taste of the lead at 56-55 on a semi-hook by Alexander with 55 ticks left in the third period.

Tension ran high early in the contest with two flagrant fouls and a technical infraction called in the first half ending in Air21's favor at 37-34.

Alex Crisano started it all with a hard foul on Thomas, who piled up big numbers right in the opening quarter with nine points and eight rebounds, giving the Express a 27-15 lead going into the second period.

The Express were still in control when Mark Caguioa and Junthy Valenzuela were whistled a flagrant foul and a technical foul on Arwind Santos and Ranidel de Ocampo, respectively. A little later, KG Canaleta also threw a flagrant foul on former UE teammate Paul Artadi.

Air21 scored all of the game's first 14 points as Ginebra got off to a fumbling start, going 0-of-6 from the field and committing three turnovers in the first five minutes of the contest.

The Kings fell behind by 16 at 17-33 before picking up their game working on a decisive run to come within three at the turn.

Ginebra hit at a 47.4 percent shooting against Air21's 20-percent clip in the second period to get back into the game going into the final half. (NC)

The scores:

Ginebra 80 – Alexander 37, Menk 10, Tubid 9, Pacana 6, Valenzuela 5, Caguioa 5, Artadi 4, Salvacion 2, Crisano 2, Reavis 0.

Air21 75 – Thomas 20, De Ocampo 16, Santos 10, David 10, Canaleta 7, Arboleda 4, Billones 3, Cruz 2, Se 2, Intal 1, Kramer 0.

Quarterscores: 15-27, 34-37, 61-55, 80-75.

Harbour, FEU join forces (August 6, 2008)

PBL five-time champion Harbour Centre yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with leading UAAP title contender Far Eastern University in a deal that is expected to boost their winning chances in their respective leagues.

"Our agreement is that we have to help each other out to keep our winning tradition going," said Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero. "FEU is a tough team, so we hope we can help them achieve their goal this year. But I'm confident they (Tamaraws) can do it."

"They (Tamaraws) are young and promising players and we feel we can help them reach their full potential, but their program is already good so it's just a matter of timing," added Romero.

Part of the two-year deal is that Harbour Centre will help FEU in its recruitment program and training of their players.

The Tamaraws finished in joint second with defending champion La Salle at 5-2 at the end of the first round elimination. Ateneo topped the first round elims with a 6-1 card.

After the UAAP season, at least 9 players from the FEU squad will get the chance to play for Harbour in the coming PBL where the Batang Pier are hoping to extend their championship run to six.

FEU team manager Anton Montinola expressed delight with their partnership with Harbour Centre, saying both ball clubs boast of a rich winning tradition.

"This is a perfect partnership since we both have a winning tradition and our players are already ripe for the PBL," said Montinola. "This is just the right time."

The Batang Pier made history in the PBL recently by becoming the first team to win five-straight championships.

The Tamaraws, on the other hand, share the honor with University of Santo Tomas as the winningest clubs in the prestigious collegiate league with 19 titles each.

Also present during the signing of MOU were team manager Erick Arejola, FEU athletic moderator Mark Molina, coach Jorge Gallent and Harbour Centre COO Edwin L. Jeremillo.

"We have only a two-year deal but it's renewable. We can extend it to five or six years," said Arejola. "We hope that other teams in the PBL will also help some schools."

Among the FEU players being eyed by Gallent are Benedict Fernandez, Ricky Cawaling, John Aldrech Ramos, Reil Crvantes, Andy Mark Barroca, Paul Joseph Sanga, Jen Dieter Knuttel, Edgar Tanuan and Jonblargs Alisbo.

"We can possibly send them abroad for next year's UAAP tournament," said Arejola

finals game june 29 pampanga leg

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Smart-Pampanga Buddies captured the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg with a dramatic win over the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, 78-77, Sunday at the University of the Assumption Gym.

Bulldozing through the opposition in the first four days of the tournament, the Buddies of Coach Aric del Rosario suddenly found their biggest threat in a team whose lone win in the prelims was via forfeiture and then sneaked into the finals via a late miracle triple in Saturday’s semifinals.

Francis Mercado canned a left corner jumper with 39 seconds left off a kick-out pass from the driving Larry Rodriguez for the game’s final and marginal points, 78-77. The Buddies then clamped on defense, stopping several Heroes plays and chopping time away from the clock.

In the final play of the game, Nani Epondulan launched a side attempt that missed. Marvin Yambao, ironically a former Assumption varsity star now playing for the visitors, found himself unguarded as he tipped in the miss at the buzzer. However, the referees ruled the shot was released after the buzzer had sounded, thus triggering the Buddies’ celebration.

The Buddies controlled the first half, 45-38, and looked towards reprising their blowouts of the past days. However, the Heroes of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino lived up to their team name and battled back gallantly behind Lawrence Bonus, Fritz Bauzon and Haddi Porto to lead entering the final canto, 60-59.

Emmerson Oreta and Rodriguez combined for 11 of the Buddies’ first 17 points in the fourth quarter to erect a 76-68 advantage with 3:42 remaining. The Heroes the gave one last surge, culminating with a Porto field goal that gave them the lead for the last time, 77-76, and 1:03 on the clock.

Oreta capped his tournament-long brilliance with a 25-point output. Rodriguez had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Bauzon led the Heroes with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Bonus added 17 and Epondulan 16.

Meanwhile, the Zamboanga Amores of Coach Ronald Rico ended their campaign on a positive note by taking Third Place honors over the Iloilo Mang Inasals of Coach Jerry Jaranilla, 106-93. The Amores, whose participation was also supported by Rep. Erbie Fabian, led all the way from the opening buzzer and never allowed the Mang Inasals to threaten.

Jonathan Parreno and Charlie Bolias submitted 33 points each to power the Amores. Ferdinand Go paced Iloilo with five triples en route to 27 points. Chito Jaime and Eldrin Senierez followed with 13 markers apiece.

The Liga Pilipinas Tour will next visit the cities of Taguig and Pagadian beginning July 2.

june 28 4th game pampanga leg

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – It will be the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes against the host Smart-Pampanga Buddies for the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg after both teams registered contrasting wins in the semifinal round Saturday (June 28) at the University of the Assumption Gym.

Before the games could begin, the league announced that the semifinal pairings would be changed after it was ruled that the Zamboanga Amores forfeited their opening day win against the Heroes for fielding an ineligible player. It was found out that center Unik Reyes, who played nine scoreless minutes in the said contest, was not in the Amores’ original submitted roster. Hence, the once 1-2 Amores dropped to 0-3 while the erstwhile winless Heroes rose to 1-2 and both teams switching semifinal opponents.

Center JR Gerilla drilled in a triple with 6.7 seconds to lift the Heroes over the Iloilo Mang Inasals, 79-78. Silent the entire second half after tallying seven points in the first half, Gerilla received a kick-out pass by the posting Mark Benitez for the winning shot. Iloilo coach Jerry Jaranilla sued for time but Nestor David’s shot in the final play of the game missed the mark.

It was a sorry loss for Iloilo, which erected a seven-point lead with 2:15 to go, 76-69. The Heroes of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino clawed back via a Lawrence Bonus follow-up, a Jeff Tajonera triple and a basket by Benitez to tie the count at 76-76 with 30 ticks remaining. David temporarily gave the lead back to Iloilo on two free throws off a Gerilla foul with 19.6 seconds to play.

Fritz Bauzon topped the Heroes with 16 points. Jonathan Rivera scored 12 of his 15 points in the third period as the Heroes overturned their 34-39 halftime deficit to tie the contest entering the fourth quarter, 60-60. Chito Jaime had another monster game for Iloilo with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Francis Barcellano added 14 markers.

In the nightcap, the Buddies whipped the Amores for the second day in a row, 98-86, maintaining their spotless record. After a tight first quarter that saw three deadlocks and five lead changes, the Buddies under Coach Aric del Rosario unleashed their might in the second period to outscore the Amores, 32-17, for a 57-39 halftime tally. Larry Rodriguez and Khiel Misa presided over the onslaught by combining for 14 points.

The Buddies did not relent, stretching their lead to its furthest midway in the third quarter, 71-46. The margin remained in the twenties until a little too late explosion in the fourth period led by Peter Naron and Jonathan Parreno whittled the final deficit.

Rodriguez had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds plus two blocks. Emmerson Oreta also had superb numbers off the bench with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Naron paced the Amores of Coach Ronald Rico and Rep. Erbie Fabian with 18 points and seven rebounds. Parreno followed with 17.

The undefeated Buddies are heavily favored in Sunday’s finale owing to their home court advantage and their 73-65 triumph over the Heroes last June 26.

june27 3rd game pampanga leg

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – Host team Smart-Pampanga Buddies swept the preliminary round of the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg Friday (June 27) by pushing aside the Zamboanga Amores, 91-86, at the University of the Assumption Gym.

The well-played game by the Buddies of Coach Aric del Rosario almost ended in disaster. The Buddies erected their biggest lead of the match at 18 markers, 85-67, with 3:23 to play in the final period.

Suddenly, Jonathan Parreno and Ronald Saracho scattered a combined five triples as part of a 19-5 run that allowed the Amores of Coach Ronald Rico to close in by four points with a long eight ticks on the game clock, 86-90. Junnie Navarro quickly fouled Jared Dillinger, who could only make one free throw. Parreno then raced down the court for another triple that bounced off the rim just before the final the buzzer.

Larry Rodriguez and Emmerson Oreta continued to show the way for the Buddies with 16 points each. Charlie Bolias led the Amores of Coach Ronald Rico with 15 followed by Peter Naron with 14. The Amores, also supported by Rep. Erbie Fabian, ended the prelims with a 1-2 record.

In the first game, the Iloilo Mang Inasals of Coach Jerry Jaranilla secured the second seeding in Saturday’s crossover semifinals by keeping the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino winless in three games, 76-67. Iloilo improved to 2-1.

Big men Francis Barcellano and Chito Jaime topped Iloilo with 18 markers each. Barcellano also hauled 10 rebounds. Nani Epondulan tallied 18 points for the Heroes while Fritz Bauzon chipped in 14.

It will be the Buddies (3-0) against the Heroes (0-3) and the Mang Inasals (2-1) playing the Amores (1-2) in the crossover semifinals. The winners will dispute the leg championship on Sunday (June 29). The losers will meet for Third Place.

june26 2nd game pampanga leg

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga –The host Smart-Pampanga Buddies cruised to their second straight win in as many games by beating the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, 73-65, in continuing action at the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg Thursday at the University of the Assumption Gym.

Trailing by a point in the second period, 22-23, the Buddies of Coach Aric del Rosario went on a 10-0 run ignited by an Emmerson Oreta triple for a 32-23 tally. The Buddies never relinquished the lead from thereon, leading at the halftime break, 37-32.

Jemal Vizcarra and Christian Luanzon then scored all of their eight and six markers in the third quarter to repel all of the Heroes’ attempts to rally. The best the Heroes could do was close in by a pair, 47-45, on a Mark Benitez field goal. Vizcarra promptly answered with a triple to cool the rally, 50-45. Khiel Misa buried a triple for the Buddies’ biggest lead, 65-50, and seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Oreta led the Buddies for the second game in a row with 14 markers. Larry Rodriguez chipped in nine. Benitez topped the Heroes with 13 points and 11 rebounds followed by Lawrence Bonus with 10 points. The Heroes of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino remained winless in the five-day tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

In the curtain-raiser, the Iloilo Mang Inasals walloped the Zamboanga Amores, 105-94, to level their win-loss card at 1-1. The Amores likewise ended with a 1-1 record.

The Amores, coming off an 81-71 win over the Heroes the other day, were in the contest for the first quarter, leading 20-19. From there, the Mang Inasals mentored by Coach Jerry Jaranilla banked on Ferdinand Go and Chito Jaime as they led in team in churning out 33 points in the second period for a 52-44 halftime advantage. Iloilo led all the way from there as they erased the stigma of their 69-97 beating courtesy of the Buddies.

Go and Jaime led the way for Iloilo with 20 points each. Big men Nestor David and Francis Barcellano followed with 14 apiece. Eugene Tan had 15 assists to go with his 10 points. june 25 game 1 pampanga leg

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Smart-Pampanga Buddies proved to be unfriendly hosts as they crushed the Iloilo Mang Inasals, 97-69, in the featured contest on the opening day of the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg Wednesday (June 25) at the University of the Assumption Gym.

The Buddies under Coach Aric del Rosario controlled the whole contest save for a brief stretch in the third period that saw the Mang Inasals of Coach Jerry Jaranilla tie the count for the first and only time, 51-51, on four consecutive free throws by Ferdinand Go. The Buddies came back to erect a shaky 60-55 advantage entering the final period.

Suddenly, the floodgates burst open. After a hook shot by Iloilo’s Francis Barcellano, the Buddies went on a 25-8 run led by Emmerson Oreta and Khiel Misa for an 85-65 bubble entering the final two minutes.

Oreta capped his performance by scoring the Buddies’ last 10 markers en rout to a final tally of 29 points. Larry Rodriguez followed with 16 points and nine rebounds. Chito Jaime topped Iloilo with 27 points and eight rebounds while Go added 11.

In the first game, the Zamboanga Amores served notice to the rest of the league by thrashing the taller Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, 81-71. The Amores of Coach Ronald Rico were winless during the preseason, marking their first win in a Liga event.

Guard Christopher Concepcion and forward Charlie Bolias combined for 12 of the Amores’ 29 points in the third period and the Heroes could only muster nine of their own as the Amores reversed their 34-42 halftime deficit, 63-57.

Emrey Ramirez then connected on two triples and Jeffrey France added two lay-ups to keep the Heroes at bay. Bolias then put the exclamation point on the win via a basket with still 1:45 on the clock, 79-70. Lawrence Bonus of the Heroes added a free throw and France a basket for the final score.

Bolias powered the Amores with 16 points followed by Ramirez and France with 12. France also hauled a team-best nine rebounds. Fritz Bauzon was the lone Hero in double figures with 10 as the rest of the wards of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino struggled for form.

Liga Pilipinas 1st Conference 2008 Format

THE TOURING PHASE

The 14 participating teams will play in a series of mini tournaments, in the process earning tour points in the standings. There will be two simultaneous mini-tournaments to be held every week with four teams playing in each tournament. Six teams will draw a bye for the same week.

Each team will get to play in four mini tournaments, hosting one while playing in three other tournaments on the road. The team assignments have been predetermined by Liga Pilipinas before the start of the season. This phase will have 14 mini tournaments of 10 games each for total of 140 games on the schedule. A team is assured of playing 20 games for the touring phase of this conference.

Preliminary Round. In the mini tournaments, the four teams will play a single round robin amongst themselves, lasting for three playing days. One tour point will be awarded for each game a team wins during the round robin.

Semifinal Round. On the fourth day, the teams will play the knockout crossover semifinals with the top team playing the fourth-ranked team in one game and the second-ranked team playing the third-ranked team in the other game. The winners advance to the championship game while the losers dispute
Third Place.

Final Round. The championship
and Third Place
game will be a one-game playoff.

Tour Points. The champion will earn 10 tour points while the runner-up gets five tour points. The
Third Place team will receive three points while the Fourth Place
team gets no points. The highest tour point total a team may get in one mini tournament is 13 points (10 for winning the championship plus three from winning all their round robin games) and 52 should they sweep all their four mini tournaments.

THE NATIONAL PHASE

When all the mini tournaments have been completed, the 14 teams will ranked according to their total tour points earned with the top 12 advancing to the playoffs or National Phase. Ties will be resolved using the latest FIBA rules as amended.

For this inaugural conference, there will be no distinction if a team is from the North (
Luzon) or the South (Vis-Min). Therefore, it is possible to have an all-North or an all-South finale. This phase will last for a minimum of 25 games and may extend to as much as 43 games. Depending on its performance, a team’s playoff stint may be anything between one to as high as 17 games.

Qualifying Round. The four best teams will proceed directly to the quarterfinals while the
Fifth to 12th Place
teams go through the qualifying round. The eight teams will be paired according to their rankings as follows:

#5 versus #12
#6 versus #11
#7 versus #10 and
#8 versus #9

The teams will play a twice-to beat series with the higher-ranked team enjoying the home court advantage by hosting the first game and if needed, the deciding second game. The four series winners advance to the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal Round. The quarterfinals will have the eight remaining teams playing a best-of-five series. The pairings will be as follows:

#1 versus #8 or #9
#2 versus #7 or #10
#3 versus #6 or #11 and
#4 versus #5 or #12

The higher-ranked team will enjoy the home court advantage by hosting the series’ first two games and if needed, the deciding fifth game. The other team will host Game Three and if needed, Game Four. The four series winners advance to the semifinals.

Semifinal Round. The semifinals will have the four remaining teams playing a best-of-five series. The pairings will be as follows:

#1, #8 or #9 versus #4, #5 or #12 and
#2, #7 or #10 versus #3, #6 or #11

The higher-ranked team will enjoy the home court advantage by hosting the series’ first two games and if needed, the deciding fifth game. The other team will host Game Three and if needed, Game Four. The two series winners advance to the Liga Pilipinas Finals.

The Liga Pilipinas Finals. The Liga Pilipinas Finals will be a best-of-five affair with the higher-ranked surviving team enjoying the home court advantage by hosting the series’ first two games and if needed, the deciding fifth game. The other team will host Game Three and if needed, Game Four.

Harbour won’t play in Jones Cup

Feeling slighted with the conditions imposed by the organizers, Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero yesterday announced that he will no longer allow his five-time PBL champion team to play in the Jones Cup in Taiwan next month.

“Before, we’re really interested in playing in the Jones Cup because we want to know and test the level of competitiveness of the tournament but I was shocked to learn the other day that they (Jones Cup organizers) set two conditions for us to play in their tournament,” said Romero. “It’s an insult to our organization, much more to our national team, so I’m backing out.”

“It’s their prerogative as hosts to impose conditions but just because we’re an amateur club they will treat us that way, I think it’s not fair,” said Romero. “It’s very disadvantageous to any RP team.”

What piqued Romero the most was the condition which states that members of the Harbour Centre-RP team should not engage other team in a fight.

“Keep discipline as it happened before that your team (RP) had fight against other teams,” the Jones Cup organizer said in their letter emailed to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas .

However, the organizers failed to specify the team and the year when an RP team created a controversy in the annual tournament.

“What if they will try to maim my players, what we will do? We’ll just stand and say that’s OK. They should remember that we, Filipinos, helped popularize basketball in the Asian region. We know our basketball,” said Romero.

The other condition is that Harbour Centre will be the ones to pay for the airfare of the entourage which is not the normal practice of the organizers. But they said they will take care of the board and lodging and local transportation of the 17 members of the team.

“I’m willing to pay for the airfare of the team but do I have to do it just to play with them? If we’re not welcome to their tournament, then sabihin lang nila,” said Romero.

In the past, including last year when the PBA-backed Philippine team competed in the tournament, the organizers paid for everything -- airfare, board and lodging and local transportation.

“They (Jones Cup organizers) paid for our airfare, board and lodging and even our transportation there,” said PBA Media Bureau chief Willy Marcial. “I don’t know why they changed their practice this time.”

If not for those conditions, Romero was willing to reinforce the team with at least four PBA players and US NCAA veteran Japeth Aguilar.

“With a combine mix of top amateur and PBA players, I think we can perform decently in the tournament. Even Jason (Castro) has signified his intention to play for the RP team before playing for the Singapore Slingers,” said Romero.

In the hope of drawing a large number of Filipino workers during duration of the tournament, the organizers have wanted to invite a PBA team but their request was turned down because of the pro league’s ongoing tournament.

“If that’s what they want, we can give them entertainment because our players are capable of providing it. We did it during our stint in Singapore where thousands showed up to support us,” said Romero, referring to their SEA Games build-up in Thailand last year.

Aside from beating the taller Slingers, Harbour-RP team went on to win the SEA Games gold medal to highlight a glorious year for the team. It also won the SEBA crown early last year before capping its dominance with a stunning come-from-behind win over Hapee Toothpaste in the PBL Invitational tournament.

BATANGAS CITY – Jason Castro put on another brilliant performance yesterday as Harbour Centre downed Hapee Toothpaste, 86-73, to win the PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup – its fifth straight championship – at the Batangas City Sports Center here.

The 5-foot-9 Castro, who will be playing for the Singapore Slingers starting in August, tallied 13 points, 9 assists and three rebounds in a big follow-up to his 28-point performance in Game 3.

A big explosion midway in the second quarter and a strong finish was what Harbour Centre all needed to wrap up the best-of-five series, 3-1.

Trailing the Complete Protectors, 24-22, Castro scored two free throws to spark a bristling 19-0 run to post 41-26 lead at the break. That run was helped by Hapee’s numerous turnovers.

The Batang Pier even padded their lead 22, 59-37, as Boyet Bautista, Sol Mercado, Jeff Chan and Jerwin Gaco joined the scoring orgy.

Hapee, also beaten by Harbour Centre in two previous championships, managed to cut Harbour’s lead to 48-59 but that proved to be their last hurrah as the Batang Pier came through with a 4-0 run capped by Al Vergara’s triple.

For his splendid showing in the series, Castro also clinched the Finals MVP trophy, thus completing his glorious season in the country’s premier amateur basketball league.

“Our aggressiveness from start to finish paid off. I told the boys that only way to beat Hapee is to play aggressive in both ends of the court,” said coach Jorge Gallent. “This is perhaps my sweetest win so far.”

Hapee, still without a title since winning back-to-back championships in the 2003-04 season, took Game 1, 74-73, but Harbour Centre won the next three games to become the fastest team in league history to win five straight championships.

Harbour Centre joined the league in the last conference of the 2005 season.

“This title is doubly sweet,” said a jubilant Romero, wearing his lucky green polo short. “This is the reward for their hard work and patience.”

Likewise, the win boosted Harbour Centre’s tag as the greatest team in recent history. It won its fifth straight title in only seven conferences in the league.

Banners proclaiming Harbour Centre’s latest victory were gleefully unfurled with still more than two minutes left as the Batang Pier valiantly protected their lead.

Castro was held to just four points in the first quarter but played like a wounded tiger in the last six minutes of the second quarter where he scattered seven points, including two free throws that sparked that vicious run.

Aside from giving coach Louie Alas a lot of headaches with his gorgeous moves in the shaded lane, Castro was equally impressive at the defensive end where his two steals was translated into baskets by Al Vergara.

He also finished the half with six assists and two rebounds, factors that boosted their confidence going into the final half.

While Harbour showed great resolve in that stretch, Hapee was a complete opposite. After only two quarters, they already committed 15 errors against only five for the Batang Pier. They also had more assists, 12-6.

Chan, one of five Habour players who scored in double figures, was named as the Pivotal Player of the series. He scored 10 points, most of them came in the second period.

With Castro and Sol Mercado alternated in shadowing Gabe Norwood, the 6-foot-5 Fil-Am was reduced to a mere spectators in the first half. He scored only six points.

Meantime, Harbour Centre’s Ty Tang was the last player given a special Commissioner’s Choice Award for his outstanding attitude towards sharing.

For giving back his allowances and much of his scholarship grant and making those same funds available for the use of others, Tang received a Civic Consciousness Award from Commissioner Chino Trinidad during halftime.
